David J. Keil grew up in a semi-rural area of the Chicago suburbs. His botanical interests were sparked early by the gardens of family and friends, the opportunities to explore nearby undeveloped areas, and grade-school field trips to the Morton Arboretum. After receiving his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University, he later joined the faculty of California Polytechnic State University teaching for 39 years as a principal instructor in Plant Taxonomy, Field Botany, and Biogeography. Dr. Keil was a primary author for both editions of the Jepson Manual, serving on the editorial board for the second edition and for the Jepson eFlora, as well as authoring a significant contribution to the Flora of North America. An active member of the San Luis Obispo chapter of the California Native Plant Society, Dr. Keil was honored in 2018 as a Fellow of the C.N.P.S.
